When this project was introduced I found myself going crazy for ideas. We could chose to do anything because it was left open to be any career, skill or issue. This is what made it hard. I jumped from one idea to the next never exactly getting anywhere. I thought maybe I could do a French teacher because it was career I know I'm interested in. I could go into the french classes at JHSS and talk to my teachers. I could also revisit either of my old schools that were a french based environment. I got more involved into the idea but soon realized it wasn't what I wanted to do for this project. My next thought was working in a healthy environment. I could go into local gyms and learn about what personal trainers do. I could also look into Nutritionist or just nutritious foods in general. I then thought about working more in my dance studio on skills or focusing on running. I realized that I knew a lot about most of this stuff because I already do it on a regular basis. Again… I was stuck. I started getting frustrated and was scrambling for ideas. I heard about other peoples ideas such as photography, cooking, writing or drawing but none of them were satisfying.
I began thinking of ideas revolving around music. I could learn about producing music, auto-tuning, radio or charts. Then I realized how much I liked just listening to music and discovering new bands. It came to me that I wanted to learn a new instrument. I already knew how to play guitar so that was out of the picture. Maybe the ukulele. But I had already learned some of that in grade 8 and it was quite similar to guitar. Finally I had made up my mind. I decided to learn how to play the piano.
In the past I have taken lessons but every time I start I quit after less than a month. This time I was determined to stick to it.
I began learning from a beginners lesson book. The songs were very short and I quickly got bored of replaying the same 5 notes. I decided I wanted to do something more. I went on YouTube and looked up the tutorial for Clocks by Coldplay. I had always wanted to learn that song and it was actually quite simple. I beg an learning different songs from tutorials but some were more difficult than others. I practiced the songs more and more and they became easier. I started picking up songs faster and the once difficult songs weren't so difficult anymore. Some of the songs I learned were: Trouble - Coldplay, Without a word - Birdy, Scientist - Coldplay, Latch - Disclosure, Read my mind - The Killers, Turning Pages - Sleeping at Last, Little Talks - Of Monsters and Men, All I Want - Kodaline.
From the beginning I started recording myself playing the songs I was learning. Sometimes I'd record only parts of songs or the entire thing depending which song it was. Recording them was actually a struggle because often I would mess up or I would be unsatisfied with how it sounded. The tutorials were sometimes hard to pick up depending on how they filmed it or their speed. It was frustrating at times when I'd have to replay the same part over & over just to be able to pick it up.
I plan on sticking with piano and building my vocabulary. In the future I want to learn more difficult songs and more about the basics of piano and sheet music. If I could change one thing it would be that I practiced even more than I did.
In the end I do believe that this was a success. I went back to playing piano and learned multiple songs. Practicing does help A LOT. The more I played the songs the more comfortable I become. I realized that you should never give up just because you have to go out of your way to do it. Stick to it and you'll have positive results in the end.
